Wise SMS ("we," "our," or "the App") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Android messaging application. Please read this policy carefully. If you do not agree with the terms, please do not use the application.

App Overview

Wise SMS is a messaging application that provides SMS/MMS functionality with enhanced features including AI assistance, translation services, theme customisation, and parental controls.​

Information We Collect
1. Messages and Communications

What We Collect:

  • SMS and MMS messages (text content, timestamps, delivery status)

  • Message metadata (read receipts, reactions, thread information)

  • Message attachments (photos, videos, audio files)

How We Use It:

  • To send, receive, and display messages

  • To provide conversation threading and organisation

  • To enable message search and filtering

  • To display message delivery and read status

Storage:
All messages are stored locally on your device within Android’s protected app storage (sandbox). We do not transmit your message content to our servers.

Control:

You are unable to use SMS, MMS in the app unless you set the app as the default SMS handler. If you ever remove it as the default SMS app, the app will no longer access SMS functionality.

2. Contacts Information

 

What We Collect:

  • Contact names, phone numbers, and email addresses from your device

  • Contact photos and avatars

  • Custom contact tags and notes you create within the app

How We Use It:

  • To display contact information in conversations

  • To enable contact search and selection when composing messages

  • To synchronise with your device's contact database

  • To provide contact-based features like conversation organisation

Storage:
Contact data is stored locally on your device. We access your device contacts through Android's Contacts API but do not transmit this information to external servers.

3. Location Information

 

What We Collect:

  • Precise location (GPS coordinates) when you use location sharing features

  • Approximate location for map-based features

  • Background location when explicitly enabled for specific features

How We Use It:

  • To share your location in messages when you choose to do so

  • To display location information on maps within conversations

  • To provide location-based features you explicitly enable

Third-Party Services:
Location data shared in messages uses Google Maps API. When you share location, Google's privacy policy applies to map display and geocoding services.

Control:
Location access is always optional and requires explicit permission. You can revoke location permissions at any time through your device settings.

4. Camera and Media

 

What We Collect:

  • Photos you capture using the in-app camera

  • Images files you select from your device gallery

How We Use It:

  • To include photos in MMS messages

  • To create custom themes from images

Storage:
Image files are stored locally on your device’s internal storage, protected by Android’s app sandbox. When sent in messages, they are transmitted directly through your carrier's MMS service.

Processing:

  • Inappropriate content detection runs entirely on your device using local AI models

  • No images are sent to external servers for content analysis

  • Theme colour extraction from images is performed locally

5. Google Services Integration

  • Purpose: Display location information and enable location sharing in messages

  • Data Shared: Location coordinates when you explicitly share your location

6. OpenAI Services Integration

 

OpenAI ChatGPT AI

  • Purpose: Power in-app AI chat, provide answers, creative writing help, and style transformations.

  • Data Shared: Message text you send to the AI chat or choose to transform (processed by OpenAI's servers).

Data Retention:

Generated responses are stored locally. You can report inappropriate response via a long-hold on the message and then using the ... 'report' option.

OpenAI Image Generation - theme backgrounds

  • Purpose: Allow Premium subscribers to generate new theme backgrounds.

  • Data Shared: User prompt and style selected

Data Retention:

Generated themes images are stored locally. You can report a generated image as inappropriate by the 'report' button.

Safety:

  • The cloud model refuses to generate inappropriate images.

  • On-device model scans all images generated to also check for inappropriate content. This will block and require carer approval before being visible to the user.

  • Users and carers can use the 'report' button to report an image as inappropriate, which will remove from the device and report the image along with prompt and style information to our team so we can review and improve our models.

7. AI Assistant Chats

 

Cloud Processing (Optional):

  • When you use the AI Assistant feature, messages are sent to configured AI providers (OpenAI)

  • Cloud AI usage is tracked within the app for limit enforcement 

  • Carers control whether AI features are available

Data Retention:
Data is stored locally. You can report any generated content as inappropriate via the 'report' button - see below. You can clear this data at any by uninstalling the app.

Control:

You can block or report any AI generated text message. To report a generated AI response as inappropriate, long-press the response and select the ... button. Then click the 'report' button. This will send both your prompt and the AI response to our team for review so we can help check and improve the AI responses.

8. Device Information

 

What We Collect:

  • Device model and Android version

  • App version and build information

  • Network connectivity status

  • Screen size and display density

  • Pseudonymous device identifier is used for reports and moderation

How We Use It:

  • To ensure compatibility and optimal performance

  • To provide appropriate UI layouts for your device

  • To troubleshoot technical issues

  • To determine network availability for features that require connectivity

  • Rate limiting / abuse prevention / duplicate-report detection and debugging. Never ads.

Storage:
This information is used within the app and is not transmitted to external servers except as part of standard Google Play Services functionality.

9. Premium Features and Billing

 

What We Collect:

  • Google Play purchase tokens and transaction IDs

  • Licence activation and validation timestamps

  • Feature usage statistics for premium features

  • Device fingerprint (for licence portability, not restriction)

How We Use It:

  • To validate premium feature access

  • To enable licence portability across your devices

  • To prevent unauthorised feature access

  • To provide customer support for billing issues

Third-Party Processing:
All payment processing is handled by Google Play Billing. We do not collect or store credit card information.

Data Shared with Google:
Transaction verification data is shared with Google Play for licence validation.

10. Theme Sharing (Optional)

 

What we collect when sharing a theme to the public marketplace

  • Custom theme configurations you choose to share

  • Theme metadata (name, colors/styles, optional images) + creator profile linkage (creator_id/display_name) + submission status.

  • If you choose to publish a theme to the community marketplace, we create a pseudonymous creator profile (random UUID) and record your acceptance of the community sharing terms (version + timestamp), along with app version/platform/locale for audit and compliance.

How We Use It:

  • To enable sharing custom themes with other users via MMS

  • Enable community theme sharing

  • Enable public creator attribution on community themes, enforce “agree before first share”, and maintain compliance/audit trail for UGC sharing.

What we collect when reporting a public theme

  • theme_id (+ optional theme_code), report reason/category + optional description, device_id, app_version.

How we use it:

  • Moderation review, abuse prevention, removing/limiting content, and improving safety tooling.

Where stored:

  • In our backend (Firebase/Firestore), not just locally.

Control:

  • Theme sharing is entirely optional. You choose which themes to share and can delete shared themes at any time. You can share a theme privately with a friend via MMS, or submit to a public marketplace.

  • Before any theme is made available on the community marketplace, it is first reviewed and either approved or blocked by our team. No theme is ever made public before being approved by a human.

  • Users can also report a community theme as inappropriate. This report will then be reviewed by our team to potentially remove the community theme.

11. Notifications

 

What We Collect:

  • Notification preferences and settings

  • Badge count data for unread messages

  • Notification interaction history (local only)

How We Use It:

  • To display message notifications

  • To show unread message counts on the app icon

  • To provide customisable notification sounds and vibrations

Storage:
Notification data is stored locally on your device.

The vast majority of data processing occurs entirely on your device:

  • Message storage and retrieval

  • Inappropriate image detection

Only when you explicitly use these features:

  • Message translation (Google Translate)

  • Style transfer (Google Gemini)

  • Cloud AI Assistant (OpenAI)

  • AI theme background generation (OpenAI)

  • Location sharing (Google Maps)

  • Report an AI generated text or image as inappropriate (Google Firebase)

  • Community theme sharing + reporting: When you submit a theme to the community marketplace or report a theme, the app sends limited metadata to our servers for moderation.

  • SMS/MMS message content and metadata are transmitted through your carrier's network

  • Your carrier's privacy policy and terms of service apply to this data transmission

  • We have no control over how carriers process or store this data

2. Google Services (When You Use Optional Features)

 

  • Google Maps: Location coordinates when you share your location

  • Google Translate: Message text when you use translation features

  • Google Play: Billing and licence validation data for premium features

3. OpenAI Services (When You Use Optional Features)

  • OpenAI AI: Message text when you use AI assistant

Limitations

 

  • Your device’s security depends on your screen lock, biometrics, and OS version.

  • We cannot guarantee the security of data in transit through your carrier’s network.

Data Retention

 

Local Data

  • Messages: Stored on your device until you delete them

  • Contacts: Synced with your device contacts; removed when you delete them

  • Media: Stored on your device until you delete them

  • Settings: Retained until you uninstall the app or clear app data

 

Deletion

You can delete your local data by:

  • Clearing app data through Android Settings > Apps > Wise SMS > Storage > Clear Data

  • Uninstalling the application

Children's Privacy

Wise SMS is intended for children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Parental Controls: The app includes optional parental control features designed to help parents monitor and restrict messaging for minors. These features:

  • Allow parents to set time restrictions on app usage

  • Enable contact whitelisting to limit who can be messaged

  • Provide content filtering options

  • Are configured and controlled by the parent/guardian

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete the information.

Advertising

We do not display advertisements, so there are no advertising IDs or tracking for advertising purposes.
